In Cape Town, like many ghettos around the world, public parks can be questionable type spaces where various negative activity may abound. In essence, these spots are magnetic to the youth of the area economically removed from opportunity and better choices. Hence parks see gang members or kids aspiring to be that, drug abuse and other harmful time-wasting activities.

Hip Hop originates in the hood and the streets. It’s not a genre but a movement and has served the ghettos since spawning from jazz & funk records in 70’s Bronx, New York. It is only natural that the movement will target community parks with it’s positive good vibes empowering and inspiring breakdance, funky DJ’ing, word skills and art.

In Cape Town this counter activity to all the negative elements encountered on parks through hip hop is known as a “Park Jam”. Mitchell’s Plain the original breeding grounds for local hip hop and graffiti since the late 80’s has a tradition of park jams especially because of the numerous amount of parks situated in the large township.

One of the earliest areas in Mitchell’s Plain to breed Cape Town hip hop besides, Westridge is an area called Lentegeur and this Saturday the Cape Flats suburb will host its first Jam for the year, “Park Jam 2016”. The event will be hosted by Cape Town collective, Semels Unite made up of DJ’s, MC’s, dancers and artists who will have some of the city’s freshest  joining forces with them –
